Press Release

Press ReleaseRelay For Life Success                           30th September 2008

The first ever Gibraltar Relay For Life organized by Cancer Research UK – Gibraltar Branch (Gibraltar Registered Charity No. 18) was successfully held at the Victoria Stadium over the weekend of Saturday 20th to Sunday 21st September 2008.

Fifty one registered teams, comprising over 750 people ended up participating in this 24 hour overnight event. Over fifty Cancer Survivors were also present as Guests of Honour for the first lap of the Relay, started off by Miss Gibraltar, and led by the band of the 1st 4th Scout group.

A constant stream of members of the public attended throughout the weekend to witness and support the efforts of all the participants, committed around the track over these 24 hours.

An information and Cancer Awareness stand was also set up in conjunction with the GHA. There were various food stalls, team games and activities, as well as a full programme of entertainment, which included live bands, dance groups, batuka and line dancing amongst others.

The Candle of Hope ceremony on Saturday at 2130hrs proved to be a particularly poignant experience when around 1250 dedicated candles were lit up and was one of the highlights of the event.

In all, Relay For Life raised £25,000 up to the end of the 24hrs, but this has now increased to just over £30,000!

We wish to thank all those who attended, participated and assisted us in so many different ways. There are many people to thank, many of whom have given up their time, raised and donated money to help make this Relay a success. They are too numerous to mention individually but without them this first Relay For Life would not have been possible.

Well done and many thanks to all as this is an investment for a better future.
Next year we will be bigger and better!
