A cycle event was organized on the 4th September at Winchester, UK which involved a mass ride from Winchester to Portsmouth. Subsequently 24 people continued to cycle all the way down to Gibraltar through western France and Spain, having arrived here on 18th September.
The group of 24 riders plus their support vehicle, was a mixed group of senior IBM, BT executives and a number of Doctors and friends from the Winchester area including a member of the Great Britain Olympic Rowing squad for 2012, Andy Hore who is 21 years old and also a Rugby League player.
Another of the participants was Hampshire County Councillor, Andrew Gibson together with Dr Tim Frank, a highly respected 47 year old Hampshire GP who founded 'Inspired Living' (www.inspiredliving.org.uk/cycle4life) in July 2009, following the death of his wife, Marey from an aggressive breast cancer with the following aims:
- to inspire ordinary men & women to adopt healthier lifestyles to reduce their risk of contracting cancer
- to produce medical research information which is of high value in the fight against cancer
- to raise £1 million for Cancer Research
They were met at the frontier by members of the local committee (CRUK Gibraltar Branch) and were escorted by an RGP motorcyclist to the Kings Bastion Leisure Center for a well earned rest and meal. The Hon. Minister for Culture Edwin Reyes and Mr Joe Hernandez the Sports & Leisure CEO were present to greet the cyclists and congratulate them on their achievement.
